Legend of Zelda - Gone Fishing - J.D. Coughlan

Wide panel at the top, 2x2 grid for the rest.

Panel 1: Wide shot. Link lies lazily on the bank of a river, reclining with a fishing rod propped up beside him.

Panel 2: Closer up. The rod starts to twitch, and Link opens his eyes, looking excitedly at it.

SFX: twitch twitch

Panel 3: Link, now standing up, pulls on the rod with difficulty.

LINK: HYAH!

Panel 4: Link stares dumbfounded at the fish on the end of his line, which is a Magikarp from Pokemon.

NO DIALOGUE

Panel 5: Same as above, but now Ash Ketchum from Pokemon, and his trusty Pikachu, lean in from off-panel, and Link looks sideways at them.

ASH: You gonna eat that?

PIKACHU: Pika?

Legend of Zelda – The Curse of Tingle – MK Stangeland Jr.

(6 Panels)

Panel 1: LINK has entered the forest clearing bearing the MASTER SWORD. His face is in shock at an unseen event just off-panel.

Panel 2: LINK looks up as section of the forest – including the alter with the MASTER SWORD – is being lifted up and out of the surrounding ground by a giant red balloon, with TINGLE hanging mid-air directly below the balloon.

Panel 3: LINK readies his bow and aims up in the air. The look on his face is a mix of heroic determination and ‘No, I refuse to put up with this $#*^’.

Panel 4: The arrow flies through the air in a dramatic fashion.

Panel 5: The balloon explodes as the arrow impacts.

Panel 6: TINGLE looks up at the exploded balloon with an ‘uh oh!’ face, just before gravity takes over.

The Legend of Zelda - It's Dangerous to Go Alone! - Grant McLaughlin

1 - Link and Ganondorf are fighting, leaping towards each other with their swords at the ready and determination in their eyes.  From their cuts, bruises, and exhaustion, it's clear that this fight has been going on for a while and is nearing its end.

CAPTION (ZELDA): You have never shied away from danger.

2 - They cross swords, fighting with one another for the upper hand.

CAPTION (ZELDA): Always ready to answer Hyrule's calls for aid.

3 - Ganondorf takes a hand from his sword and sweeps it across Link's face in a vicious backhand that sends the hero flying backwards off of his feet.

CAPTION (ZELDA): And yet, it doesn't seem fair that the task should invariably fall to you.

4 - Link is still on the ground, trying to get his bearings.  Ganondorf stands tall, his sword raises to finish off Link.

CAPTION (ZELDA): It is a heavy burden for one person to bear alone.

5 - Inset panel of one of Link's eyes, open in fear / shock.  If it's not too much, maybe have a reflection of Ganondorf's sword coming down.

NO COPY

6 - Zelda is on the scene with her sword up to block Ganondorf's blow and save Link.  Link and Zelda share a knowing look as Link gets up to get back in the fight.  Zelda is wearing some adventuring attire that is maybe a combination of her regular dress and outfit when she's masquerading as Sheik.  She also bears cuts and wear that imply she's been part of the fight from the start.

CAPTION (ZELDA): So let us bear it together.

Why The Legend of Zelda?

Is that a for real question?

There are so very many reasons.

It's one of the most iconic Nintendo properties.  There have been a plethora of games released under the banner, many of which could convincingly be argued to be among the best video games of all time.  The series has featured some enchantingly beautiful art, environments, and characters, along with astoundingly wonderful music.  It's spawned a number of a comic / manga adaptations (including Shotaro Ishinomori's adaptation of A Link to the Past, which is being re-released this week).  To name but a few.

All that being said, for me, The Legend of Zelda is all about Ocarina of Time.

Playing that game was a revelation.  An adventure game that truly felt like an adventure, it let you wander and explore this amazing, wide, and wonderful world that had mysteries and magic behind every corner.  Taking control of Link, you slowly realize just how deep and complex the world is, and it was amazing.

I still remember Navi racing through Link's village in Kokiri Forest to wake him from his prophetic nightmare.  Before I knew it, I was endeavouring to save the Great Deku Tree, sneaking into Hyrule Castle, dealing with the dangers of Death Mountain, and diving into the belly of Lord Jabu-Jabu, all in the effort to do what's right and be a hero.

And all that was before I got involved with the Temple of Time, growing up, and contending with the various challenges of spirit temples (do not even get me started with that dang Water Temple).  I still think fondly of my times in Hyrule squaring off with epic bosses, meeting true friends, and listening to some of the best tunes around.

The game was (and remains) an amazing example of modern-day mythmaking, and one of the most exciting parts is that you as the player actively participate in the whole thing.  I obviously didn't consciously catch this when playing as a youth, but that's undeniably what happened.

So while I'm sure many of us have our own personal experiences in different games of guiding Link through darkness towards the light, my suggestion this week is that we give it a go through a different medium.

I look forward to seeing different interpretations this week, whether from our tenured members or anyone who'd like to jump in and play at home.  The gameplay for the series has often been top notch, but it's the storytelling that has made it Legendary.
